At some point and time we will experience a light wind day kiteboarding. When the wind is light, what to do? Should you get a bigger kite? A wider board? Use a direction board? Hydrofoil? Pack up and go home? The answer will vary per person and situation.
The beginner and old school view is that if I am struggling “I need a bigger kite” whether its light wind or not. Power is created by speed in part created by kite movement - the problem with big kites is that they are generally slow. This might make it actually harder for the rider when using a big kite. On top of that, big kites are very expensive and have a small wind range. Unless the spot is stable and super light - you have a very high chance of often being overpowered. This is why a wider board is more practical over buying or using a larger kite, and a board will last you longer than a kite.
If you are experiencing light winds an idea would be to get a directional board or even a hydrofoil. This will make it so you do not need extra kites and even the opposite, over time you might need less kites if you have various board options.
So what do you think? Do you agree or disagree? Different board or bigger kite?
