Introducing Jay Nerbring, New IKO Examiner
31 Jan 2013
Assistant Examiner Realizes the Dream of Examiner
Jay Nerbring Becomes Examiner
Escaping into the warm weather and great wind conditions, Swedish born native and entrepreneur, Jay Nerbring, has setup his Kite Center in Thailand and actively organizes ITCs. And now, Nerbring will be conducting the ITC trainings as an Examiner this year, 2013. For Nerbring, being an Assistant Examiner was a great start to getting on the path to training those who want to become kiting instructors. For years, Jay would employ IKO Examiners to come and conduct trainings. Now, he can do them himself as an Examiner, which as he says changes his business for the better. He can now train his own Instructors, save money and schedule trainings at his convenience by conducting the trainings himself. Congratulations Jay Nerbring on your promotion to Examiner.
Passionate for Kiteboarding
Despite being born in cold and snowy weather of Sweden, Nerbring became addicted to kiteboarding on water. He went to Thailand for the tropical weather, which has 7-months where the kiting and the wind is good. Jay started kiteboarding 7 years ago when kiting was at its peak and safety was becoming more of a focus. He got into kiting because he was always into water sports, but kiting offered a combination of aerial, water and extreme sports all rolled up into one. “It’s perfect!” exclaims Jay.
Commitment to Safety Turns Into Career
While owning his own Kite Center for the last 4 years, Nerbring became avidly committed to safety and passionate with ensuring that his instructors had all the best training. He says, “the most important thing is to ensure that his instructors follow the rules and the guidelines.” Coupled with this insistent for quality along with the need for fluid international recognition, Nerbring affiliated his Kite Center with the IKO and became certified as an IKO Instructor progressing onto Assistant Examiner.
Promoted From Assistant Examiner to Examiner
While being an Assistant Examiner gave him many opportunities to inure some of the benefits of IKO Examinership, the one thing it could not do is allow him to train his own instructors at his own Kite Center, Kiteboarding Asia Pranburi.
But, Nerbring just finished his Examiner Training and has already scheduled his first ITCs. “What this does for me is help me in my business,” says Nerbring. Now, he does not rely on hiring outside Examiners to come train at the ITCs he organizes. He will however most likely have guest Examiners from time-to-time so that he can ensure a mixture of new and updated training methods.
Learning new ways to teach helps Nerbring become a better trainer even though he was already a teacher by profession. Out of college, Jay Nerbing was a physical education teacher and along the way did teach English. Teaching comes natural to him. He took his love of teaching, his expertise in it and united it with his passion for kiteboarding and made one fine entrepreneurial jump into teaching kiting instructors at his own Center.
Challenges of Being an Examiner
“Knowing the material to be able to answer your students’ questions and having experience from around the world so that you can address all types of conditions,” is what Nerbring says are the challenges he will face as an Examiner. They are exciting challenges but will be a lot of work. As far as the Examiner course, Nerbring says, “making sure that you are prepared and organizing the course correctly were the challenges. “The great thing is that I picked up some great tips from IKO Training Masters, David Dorn and Xavier Roussos.” The course itself does offer Candidate Instructors simulations.
Advice from Jay Nerbring, Examiner
For people who are passionate about kiteboarding, want to train others and contribute to the sport of kiteboarding, Jay Nerbring recommends going through the Examiner training. According to Nerbring, the Examiner training is a lot of work but worth it. He says that learning under other Examiners is the best part as you get to learn new methods of teaching.
Up Next for Nerbring
He will be assisting with the Boracay Training Tour and teaching his own instructors in Thailand. For him, Thailand is a special place because of the people, food and weather for kiting. Right now, February, March and April in Thailand the conditions are right for learning with flat water, wide beaches and a bit of lagoons.
